2009 NCECA and Arvada Center “Continental Divide” Regional Exhibition

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will host the 2009 “Continental Divide” Regional Exhibition from September 17 – November 15, 2009.

NCECA and the Arvada Center are organizing a blended invitational and competitive ceramic exhibition for artists from the geographic region of the Continental Divide.  Artists from the states of Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico are invited to submit work for consideration. This format brings established reputations and emerging talent to bear on the selected theme and adds vitality and fresh perspectives to an ongoing dialogue.
The exhibition is curated and organized by NCECA Exhibitions Director, Linda Ganstrom; the Arvada Center’s Ceramics Program Coordinator, Bebe Alexander; and the Arvada Center’s Gallery/Museum Exhibition Designer, Collin Parson.

Concept

This exhibition seeks to investigate the similarity and disparity between ceramic vessels and sculptures in the geographic regions of the Continental Divide. How are the practices and outcomes of studio potters similar or different from sculptors using ceramics in this region?  What is the relevance of their production and product to their specific communities?  How does the landscape affect their work in inspiration, production, and distribution?  How have natural resources impacted their practice and art?  How has their work influenced or been influenced by the art of others in the region?

Media & Limitations

All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only if ceramic materials are the primary media, although video documentation of projects involving ceramics will be considered.  The curators will make final determinations.  Work must fit through a standard door. Floor works must be firmly stable. Wall-mounted pieces are limited to 20 lbs per section.  Works may be hung from the ceiling.  Work must have been produced within the last five years and not have been shown in previous NCECA exhibitions.

Thank you for your support of the K-12 Exhibition! My students participated this year and it was incredible. When we touch these kids at such an impressionable age we are sending them the message of how important ART is!!
