2006 Invitational Exhibition

January 10 to March 12, 2006

In conjunction with the 2006 NCECA conference in Portland, Oregon the Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art on the campus of Lewis and Clark College hosted the NCECA 2006 Invitational Exhibition.  Linda Tesner, Director of the Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art and Holly Hanessian, NCECA Exhibitions Director, jointly curated the Invitational Exhibition.

Titled, The New Utilitarian: Examining our Place on the Motherboard of Ceramics, this exhibition explored ideas of technology and our place in society in the 21st century by focusing on the concept of the motherboard. A motherboard is the circuit board in a minicomputer through which all signals are directed.

The New Utilitarian, reflected these concerns by examining our culture and the impact of new media and technology on ceramics.  Artists, acting as visual archivists, have watched the fast pace of technological advances and have responded by creating a range of relevant artwork. By adapting new technologies, artists have entered a time of limitless possibilities.
